ATHENS KIWANIS CLUB CHARTERED IN 1920 The Athens Kiwanis Club held its charter presentation and banquet on September 6, 1920, at 7:00 p.m. at Petty-Manker Dining Hall on the Tennessee Wesleyan campus. Garnett Hedge was the president and James Lindsey Robb was the first vice president. Ralph P. Knight was the second vice president and also served as the district trustee, while Charles W. Hammer was the secretary-treasurer. Members of the Board of Directors included Paul M. Foster, Silliam W. Grant, Fritz Long, W. Weldon Padgett, W. T. Roberts, John A. Rayle, Miles A. Riddle, and Tom Sherman. The club’s members included Henry M. Arnwine, William Ross Arrants, Carl B. Bayless, William H. Briggs, Frank Burger, H.M. Candler, R.E. Chapman, William Cooke, J. Elmo Cooke, Alvis Craig, Hubert L. Davis, Frank R. Dodson, John B. Elliott, Paul M. Foster, William W. Grant, William D. Hammontree, Charles W. Hammer, Rhea R. Hammer, Jas. B. Roberts presented the charter to the Athens Kiwanis Club, and Hedge, the local Club’s president, accepted it and gave the welcoming address. Knight spoke on “Kiwanis as a Benefit to Our City,” and E.B. Madison spoke on “Kiwanis – Its Well-being for Athens.”
