Kiwanis Through the Years

1921-The First Paved road in Tennessee was started by Kiwanians who went to Nashville and Washington for assistance, It was paved from Athens to Calhoun. Also the road from Athens to Decatur was started and partially built by Kiwanis members, who did manual labor to provide a passable road for trade, the club serving in lieu of a Chamber of Commerce, non-existent in 1921

1951-The Athens Kiwanis began its annual Barbecue and auction

1951-The Athens Kiwanis began a Vocation Day program with Tennessee Wesleyan College which was an outstanding event with approximately 700 high school seniors from about 20 High Schools

1953- A Key Club is Chartered at McMinn County High School

1958-The Athens Kiwanis club helped the City of Athens construct a tennis court at City Park School

1960-The Athens Kiwanis club helped the City of Athens construct a tennis court at Ingleside School

1961-The Athens Kiwanis starts its annual Pancake Breakfast

1962-A Circle K club is Chartered at Tennessee Wesleyan College

1962-The Athens Kiwanis Begins giving out awards to students with Academic Achievement.

1962-A school camp for a week is built for 25 deserving boys and girls at Watts Bar Lake. The club built buildings, paid for canoes and provided food and transportation

1965-The camp program is expanded to an additional girls program

1973-The Athens Kiwanis begins helping build three tennis courts at Athens Junior High School

1973-The Kiwanis Board approved female members for Circle K

1976-The Kiwanis Chartered a Builders Club at Athens Junior High

1980-The Athens Kiwanis helped with eye and dental care for needy students in Athens Schools

1980-The Athens Kiwanis donated to the city of Athens to help build a Bike Trail of about 10 miles

1981-1238 people turn out for the Athens Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast
